Amami Oshima Island

Thriving coral reefs, immaculate sandy beaches, and primeval forests
Known for their subtropical climate and excellent coral reefs, the Amami Oshima Island offer year-round opportunities for water sports such as scuba diving, boating, surfing, and swimming.

A large island, similar in size to Okinawa main island, Amami Oshima has a completely different feeling due to the sparseness of the population. The island is not a tourist hub, but is great for people who want to do a road trip, exploring the countless untouched beaches, driving on winding roads through rainforests and discovering Amami culture.

Due to the size of the island, it is good to concentrate a stay on a specific part of the island. There are many amazing beaches on Amami Oshima, and depending on the wind direction, you can be sure to find one which is perfect for the day.

Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima are islands in a chain that stretches from the base of Kagoshima Prefecture (southern Kyushu) to the northern tip of the Okinawa archipelago. The islands support a broad range of rare flora and fauna, and local communities take conserving this rich biodiversity extremely seriously. This desire to protect the precious natural environment is the primary motivator to register the islands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
