The Chiran Samurai Residence locates on the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima prefecture. Chiran Samurai Residence is known as Kagoshima’s “Little Kyoto.” Samurai residences preserving the elegance of the Edo period line a path in the complex and measure 700 meters in length. Throughout the street, there are 7 traditional style houses that are all designated as national scenic spots.
The inside of many of these residences have been opened to the public, making it possible to tour its unique gardens. There are also restaurants, cafes, and general goods stores in the area so let's enjoy a stroll. Each house has their own unique traditional Japanese-style garden. Walking through the gardens will have you feeling as if you went back in time to feudal Japan. Throughout the year, the Chiran Samurai Residence hosts unique events such as the Furusato (hometown) Festival, Rice Paddy Art and more.
Chiran was also where the Special Attack Unit base was located during World War II. Many young people who left from here lost their lives. The Chiran Peace Museum, a place that passes down this history, can also be found here.
