Matsuyama

Castle and Onsen, A Luscious Nature and Peaceful Countryside
Matsuyama is a charmingly hospitable castle town and the largest city on the island of Shikoku. It’s got ancient hot springs, a deep literary history, and is known as the mecca of haiku. But the real jewel in this fascinating city’s crown is the spectacular Matsuyama Castle perched high above the bustle of downtown and watching overall, just like the feudal lords who once called it home.

While Matsuyama isn’t trampled by international tourists, Japanese visitors have been coming here for centuries, be they pilgrims traipsing between temples or relaxation-seekers unwinding in onsens. Dogo Onsen is the most renowned hot spring in Japan. It is also thought to be the oldest hot spring in the country, with some sources claiming that it has been in use for over 3,000 years. The warm, soothing water encourages relaxation of the body and the mind, and there are three bathhouses available for visitors to enjoy.

Facing the Seto Inland Sea, the city has a mild climate throughout the year. Its dry weather makes the city a comfortable place to live. Matsuyama is an attractive place which offers both a convenient city life, and a natural seaside environment on the west side and a mountainous region on the east side. Only a short distance away, you can dive into a luscious nature and peaceful countryside.
