The Harmony of Traditional Farm Houses and Merchant Houses Create Beautiful Village
Gokasho is located in Higashioumi City of eastern Shiga Prefecture. Not only is the area a National Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District but also has been registered as a Japan Heritage spot. This town was used as a Oumi merchant area from the Kamakura period to the Showa period.
Inside the town, you can see a line of residences of merchants from that time period. Specifically, the residence home of the Uhe-e Tonomura, a famous merchant for selling dried goods, and the residence of the man who build hundreds of shops on the Korean peninsula, Jyungoro Nakae, are two big sites to see.
The Gokasho Kondo area is a region with strong links to the Omi Merchants and has been designated as a Preservation District for Group of Traditional Buildings as well as an Important Preservation District for Group of Traditional Buildings and a Japan Heritage site.
