A City Filled with History and Classic White-walled Warehouses
Kurayoshi is a friendly and historic city located at the center of Tottori Prefecture. Visit the historic merchant quarters and classic white-walled warehouses and see the former seat of power for the Hoki region. Central Tottori developed as the heart of the Hoki Province during the Nara period (710-794) when the nobility held political power. Afterwards, commerce prospered from the Edo period (1603-1868) to the Meiji period (1868-1912). The Shirakabe Storehouses (White Wall District) built by merchants during this period holds great historic value.
Mt. Utsubuki is the symbol of the city and was the site of a castle during medieval times. The preserved merchant quarters of the old castle town, Utsubuki Tamagawa, have changed little with time and are a must-see during your trip to Kurayoshi. The area contains Shirakabe Warehouses , the white-walled kura storehouses from which the city gets its name, and the red-tiled wooden buildings of Akagawara. Its waterways are home to photogenic carp and are crisscrossed with small stone bridges. The uncrowded area is a wonderful place for a stroll around a townscape that has changed little with time.
Spots where you can sense the history of the area, such as Misasa Onsen, where legend says that all kinds of sicknesses are cured, and Mitokusan Sanbutsuji Temple Nagareido Hall, a wondrous temple built on a sheer precipice, are scattered throughout nearby Kurayoshi. We especially recommend this area to those who hold an interest in old Japan.
