Makabe

Slip Back into the Early Edo Period at Old Town Makabe
The castle town of Makabe was created during the early Edo period (1603 – 1867), and the buildings and vibes from those days remain today. These traditional streets are perfect for a stroll or for a tea break. Makabe is home to many traditional buildings built from the Edo period to the early 20th century, including over 300 misegura (combined shop and dwelling), storehouses, gates, and other historical structures. They have been registered as National Tangible Cultural Properties one after another since 1999, until reaching 102 in number. In 2010, the area was selected as a National Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District. Iseya, Registered National Tangible Cultural Property, is the famous lunch spot. Its very delicious and gorgeous meal made even more enjoyable by the sophisticated atmosphere of the cultural property.

In Japan, displays of hina dolls were traditionally used to celebrate Girl’s Day in early March. In Makabe,Every year the locals open up their homes and businesses, many within these historic buildings, to host an incredible Hina Doll Festival, from February 4 to March 3. During the festival, local residents and businesses create elaborate displays of traditional hina dolls in their homes and shops, and visitors are free to enter homes as well as shops to see the displays. Many of the dolls have been passed down through families for generations. Visit the festival to enjoy a tasty lunch, shop for locally-made crafts, sip some sake, and more - all of which help support Makabe in a quest to retain its 'time-slip' atmosphere. Although lovely and quaint year-round, the town comes to life during Hina Doll Festival.
