Mino is well known for its 'Udatsu' lined old street. 'Udatsu' is a projected part of the roof designed to prevent the spd of fire to adjacent houses. Throughout history the 'Udatsu' came to denote wealth.The artistic beauty of its Udatsu housing and the simplicity of a relaxing, local town from over a thousand years ago make it a ‘must go’ destination for any lover of history. But, step outside of that archaic bubble, and there’s more culture and history just waiting to be explored.
Mino Washi Akari Art Festival is submitted from all across the country and displayed in the Udatsu Wall Historical District. As an exhibition requirement the lantern art must be created with Mino Washi, a traditional Japanese paper that has been created in the city for 1,300 years.
The beautiful paper lanterns show off the inherit characteristics of Mino Washi, like softness and beauty, and allow one to experience the unthought-of possibilities and potential for paper. Please enjoy the mysteriously beautiful atmosphere of the festival, which is completely different than that of what one would normally experience at the historical district during the day.
