Clear and Pure Water Flowing in A Stream
Samegaijuku, located in eastern Shiga, is a station town on the Nakasendo Route that connected Kyoto and Edo (present day Tokyo) during the Edo period (1603 – 1867). The town locates by the Jizo River. Samegaijuku is the distinct for its traditional townscape. Edo period homes, inns, and other structures line the clear waters of the Jizo River.
The Samegaijuku Shiryokan Museum, made up of the Samegai Toiyaba and the Old Samegai Post Office, is a must visit. During the Edo period, “Toiyaba” served as a facility that helped travelers transport their horses and luggage. This is one of the very few toiyaba remaining in almost perfect condition. The inside is open to the public, and special events such as concerts are held about 4 times a year. Baikamo is a plant only found in Japan, and has plum-like flowers that blossom in the water. You can find them in the Jizo River. Visit after sunset to see a special light-up of the river area.
